Mother’s Day is just one week away and I don’t know about you, but I always find it hard to think of new ideas for gifts for my mom. I’m a big believer in a handmade gift and this year with a new little girl to our family I decided it would be fun to make something special for Grandma! So I set out to make this Butterfly Footprint Mother’s Day Gift Idea!
I started by purchasing a plain white plate at Target…for only $3.50! I cleaned the plate well and got started with a few colors of glass paint I had on hand.
Once I was all set up, I got my little girl’s foot ready to go…I used a paint brush and I applied some paint to her foot and then with the help of my husband I tried to get a nice clean footprint on the plate.
Now this is the big thing….the LEFT foot is the right wing of your butterfly and the RIGHT foot is the left wing! That way they fan out like a butterfly’s wings!
Try as you might…it’s HARD to get a good even footprint from a baby, so ours was a little off center, but you just have to kind of make it work! It doesn’t have to be perfect remember…it’s the thought that counts! From there I added a long strip of paint down the center of the butterfly and I added little curlies on top for antennas.
I added polka dots on the plate and then I used some stenciling letters I had to stencil “GRANDMA” on the plate because it’s for my mom for Mother’s Day. Finally I popped my plate in the oven for about 20-30 minutes at 300 degrees to bake and solidify the glass plate (this makes it dishwasher safe, but depending on the paint you use you’ll have to adjust this step).
Once my plate was “cooked” it was all set up and done!
My paint was a pearl paint for the feet, so it dried a little shiny and then the pink was a frosted paint…so they did dry a bit differently than when they were applied.
I also added the year on the top for an extra little touch. You could always add a quote, add another child’s footprint or decorate it differently…use your imagination and have some fun!
