What makes an ugly sweater ugly?
To begin, an ugly sweater should be tacky or in bad style. For instance, did you ever used to read People Magazine? They always had a “Fashion Police” portion at the back of the issue. Well, an ugly sweater would for sure make that page. For example, usually ugly sweaters go overboard with embellishments, sequins, clashing colors, you name it.
How can I make an ugly sweater at home?
Well, you can make an ugly sweater a few different ways.
For instance, if you have a sewing machine at home and enjoy sewing, you can physically sew a sweater. Or, if you crochet – that’s another fun option!
However, there are a lot of other ways that you can make an ugly sweater at home. Here’s my routine for making my own ugly sweater every year.
Firstly, I look through my closet and find an old sweater that I don’t mind destroying. I’m a Christmas lover, so I have a lot of Christmas colored clothing. However, if you do not, I recommend going and buying a solid color sweater (or say, a reindeer sweater) to start.
Secondly, after I’ve found said sweater, I go to the Michael’s down the street from my house. Any crafty store will do – the dollar store is another great option. Here, I buy the embellishments that I want for my sweater. You can go with anything. However, some favorites are pom-poms, tinsel, sparkles, candy canes and even ornaments! Make sure to grab a hot glue gun here as well!
Thirdly, I take my supplies back home. Here, I lay the sweater down flat and use my hot glue gun to attach the embellishments. Then, TA DA!
However, if you are starting with a white sweater – or something along those lines – you can get fabric paint at the store and color the sweater.
How do you make an ugly Christmas sweater without sewing?
If you aren’t a sewer (or don’t have time) – don’t fret! You can easily create a sweater for this holiday season without a sewing machine. We touched on it above, if you want all of the details. But basically, find an old sweater (or go out and buy one) and then hit the craft store to buy some ugly embellishments! And there you have it – just in time for your ugly Christmas sweater party!
Who makes the ugliest sweaters?
If you’re in a time crunch or just aren’t feeling the DIY projects – then buy one online! I’ve found that Amazon or Etsy always has great options. Or, Tipsy Elves is one of my favorite sites to buy that ugly Christmas tree sweater. But seriously, go check them out!
