Mudroom Ideas
Are you looking for the best mudroom ideas to help you get organized and also look stylish? Well, you’ve come to the right place! We understand the need for a functional mudroom, but that doesn’t mean you should look past the interior design part of it. Therefore, we’ve put together our favorite mudroom ideas to keep your mudroom space clutter-free and sophisticated!
What is the purpose of a mudroom?
What even is a mudroom? To begin, a mudroom is usually in the entryway of a house. It’s usually a small space for people to hang their coats, put their shoes in cubbies and basically declutter other parts of your house. For instance, any miscellaneous items I find floating around my living room go under the storage bench in my mudroom.
With winter fast approaching, it’s a great time to re-do your mudroom design. I hate nothing more than my kids forgetting to take their shoes off and tracking muddy snow ALL throughout the house. So, I designed my mudroom to ensure that my kids would put their muddy boots into the storage area as soon as they walk in. And for the most part, it’s worked!
What should be in a mudroom?
There are a few staple things that you should incorporate into your mudroom.
Firstly, LOTS of wall hooks! At my house, I never know how many stragglers are going to be coming over after school…hah! So, I’d rather have various coat hooks (different sizes and heights, too) so jackets aren’t laying everywhere around my house! And, every family member has their own hook to hang their backpacks after school.
Secondly, a high-quality rug in the entryway is essential. Trust me, you don’t want to be vacuuming mud and dirt off the floor constantly. Additionally, some people like to use floor mats that especially durable just for this purpose.
Thirdly, having a small bench or piece of furniture that people can sit on while taking off their shoes is super helpful. Personally, I like a bench seat that offers mudroom storage underneath – a win-win! For example – my mudroom bench has lots of shoe storage underneath, which is super helpful.
Fourthly, cubbies and effective cabinetry is so crucial! Cubbies are a great storage solution for putting extra gloves, hats, scarves, etc. I designed my mudroom to have built-in open shelving and then bought cubbies that went with my design idea. Seriously – this is a great storage idea for extra storage space!
Lastly, if you’re a pet owner you know that dogs (and other animals) LOVE to track in literally every particle of dirt and mud from outside. Therefore, I make sure to keep pet supplies near the front door in a cubby in the mudroom. Trust me, come winter you’re going to need a towel to dry off those wet paws!
How do you make a small mudroom?
Trying to find entryway ideas but are working with a small space? Don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to design a functional mudroom with limited space.
Firstly, I’d start with deciding how you’re going to use your mudroom. Obviously, you’re going to want a place for people to take off their shoes and other storage options. However, do you want to have a separate place to store sports equipment or a table to put mail on top of? Or maybe a basket to put umbrellas in? Therefore, you’ll need to think about if you’ll have room for all of this.
Then, think about how you can really maximize your space while still being efficient. For example, multiple hooks are really helpful to store more items. Additionally, make the best use of space by incorporating cubbies or lockers.
Additionally, another great tip for designing a small mudroom is to see if you have any wall space available. If you do, put a mirror or some type of home decor there. Personally, I like a mirror on the wall because you can take one last look at yourself before heading out for the day. Plus, a mirror always adds to the interior design 🙂
Does a mudroom add value?
Yes! A mudroom definitely adds value to your home. For one thing, it is an additional space that provides organization and storage. Additionally, it helps keep the rest of your house clean and in good shape. Therefore, if you’re keeping up with the clutter and cleanliness of your house, you won’t have as many repairs to fix later on.
