How to Make Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake in a Crockpot
This easy dessert recipe uses cherry pie filling, devils food cake mix and a delicious combination of sweetened condensed milk and chocolate chips for a rich, gooey, fudgy topping! This amazingly simple slow cooker dessert is great for people who love that traditional black forest dessert but don’t want to make an entire layered cake.
Let’s jump right into how to make one of the simplest, crowd-pleasing dessert recipes that I know.
Step One: Start by spraying a large slow cooker insert with cooking spray and spreading the cherry pie filling across the bottom.
Step Two: Prepare devil’s food cake according to package instructions. Mix in almond extract if using for that traditional black forest flavor. Pour batter over the cherry filling + smooth out to cover cherries. Cook on low for 3-5 hours, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The total time I had my cake in the crockpot ended up being 4.5 hours to reach the appropriate fudge-like consistency.
Step Three: Once cooked through, remove the lid and + turn off the slow cooker. Prepare icing by stirring milk and chocolate chips in a medium saucepan over medium heat until fully melted.
Step Four: Once melted, pour icing over the cake. It makes a lot of icing, so feel free to save some of it for serving.
Step Five: Spoon the cake into serving bowls and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
It’s incredible that all you need is a dry cake mix, cherry pie filling, and chocolate chips and BAM! After a few hours in the slow cooker you get this decadent dessert from an easy dump cake recipe?! This Crockpot Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake is a favorite in our house and hope you and yours love it too!
Can I use other fruit if I don’t like cherries?
If you don’t like cherries, you can definitely use another canned fruit filling as long as you think it would pair nicely with the chocolate cake mix. Strawberries might be another fun option to try in place of the cherries.
If you aren’t a chocolate-fanatic, or just want another easy dump cake, you can substitute yellow cake mix (or any dry cake mix) and apple pie filling for the chocolate cake mix and cans of cherry pie filling for an apple dump cake recipe you are sure to love.
How do I serve Crockpot Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake?
We recommend serving it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, but you could also do something fun like adding chopped pecans and whipped cream to turn it into an indulgent sundae. Nothing is better than a chocolate cherry dump cake recipe with delicious ice cream on top!
Can I use fresh cherries?
You could absolutely try this recipe out with fresh cherries, but I would look into making homemade cherry pie filling first, and then use that recipe for the base of this chocolate cherry dump cake.
What can I do with lots of cherries?
First off, there’s so much you can do with loads of cherries. The easiest way to enjoy them is to eat them whole – they are a good source of Vitamin C and potassium. You can also cook them down and add them to brownie mix or atop a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
