Feeling overwhelmed by your laundry each week? I was too once. I couldn’t figure out how to keep on top of my laundry and I was constantly seeking laundry tips and tricks to show me how to keep up with laundry with a big family. Laundry seemed like a never ending task that I was destined to never complete. I’d get the laundry done, then toss it all on the bed, and be digging through a laundry mountain every morning trying to find what I wanted. My laundry was never put away and was always wrinkled and it always stressed me out to no end to never be caught up. I even started to feel a little ashamed of my constant issue when company came over or when my mom would insist on helping me fold it. Then I made a change and ever since then, for over two years now, my laundry is ALWAYS done, folded, and put away by Sunday night. And when I finish up for the week, I always feel such a sigh of relief and feeling of accomplishment. And honestly…there is nothing better than seeing empty laundry bins throughout the house as I go into my work week. Today I thought I’d share my tips on how to keep on top of laundry to make your life less stressful and be more prepared for the busy work and school week ahead. I think you’ll be surprised by my tips, but hopefully this will inspire you on ways to be less overwhelmed by laundry and feel more prepared for the days ahead!!
Feeling overwhelmed by laundry? Here’s my laundry tips and tricks.
First I should say, there is NO magic laundry tip out there. There is no secret method. Don’t be disappointed just yet. I once read an article titled something to the effect of “How to Fold Clothes Quickly”. I was intrigued. I clicked and you know what her secret was?? Not folding her clothes at all and just shoving them into the drawer. LOL. Talk about click bait. Hopefully you odn’t feel that way after reading this.
FYI though…I’m not going to share anything earth-shattering here, but I am going to share with you how you have to have the right mindset about your laundry. Seems silly, but bear with me.
People ask me–how do you get your laundry all done every single week?
My answer: I just do. JUST DO IT. Like the Nike commercial, guys. JUST DO YOUR DAMN LAUNDRY.
There’s no magic secret. Nothing you haven’t heard before. You just need to take the time and fit your laundry into your lifestyle.
Can you imagine if your friends asked you something like…”Hey, how do you manage to feed your kids EVERY DAY each week?” or “How is it possible you pay your bills every month?” or “How do you find time to get groceries each week?” What would you say to that? You just do, right? Well, laundry is the same way!
It’s all about priorities. My priority for the weekend is to get prepared for the week ahead. How do I do that? Well, I make a plan and I work to get it done. If I have a busy weekend ahead of me, I’ll stay on top of the laundry throughout the week by throwing in a load every night, folding it, and putting it away so that by weekend we have very little laundry to do.
How to Keep on Top of Laundry
I know, you’re likely shaking your head in disappointment right now telling me that there’s just no way. You can’t keep on top of it. You couldn’t possibly do it. Where’s the magic secret on how to fold laundry fast or what’s my big laundry sorting hack? Do I use a fancy laundry sorter? Sorry folks. I’m not here to make any false or misleading grand plans about how to keep on top of laundry other than to tell you that you just HAVE TO DO IT. FIND THE TIME!
I challenge you, dear reader, for one month to make it your life’s mission to get your laundry done each and every week. Done being washed, folded, and put away. Don’t let yourself make excuses, do what you have to do to get it done. After one month evaluate what you’ve had to do to stay on top of it. Have you had to move other weekend activities/priorities around to accomplish your goal? Have you met your goal?
It took me a month of FORCING myself to stay on top of it to develop the habit of getting my laundry done. Once you get in the habit, it’s not as daunting. All of a sudden, it’s just what you do on the weekend. It’s built into your thinking and your habits and your mindset.
After two months, it’s second nature and you may even find yourself remembering on Friday nights to get some laundry started. You may even be AHEAD of schedule going into the weekend because you’re so used to getting it done! I’m willing to bet you that if you stick to my method of JUST DOING IT for 8 weeks, you’ll find that it actually works.
How I get ALL my Laundry Done Every Week…
Since I started doing my laundry each week, it’s just second nature now. No more piles of laundry left unfolded. I even find ways to seek out things that need cleaned on a less frequent basis like bath mats, shower curtains, rugs, and more.
Here’s my weekly schedule for laundry typically:
- Sports clothes go into the laundry every night after a game so that they can be washed before the next day. I will toss in any other dirty laundry that will fit on those nights.
- On Fridays I have my kids get their hampers and I get the kids clothes started in the washer. I typically get at least 2-3 loads done on Friday night, but don’t fold it til Saturday or Sunday.
- On Saturdays/Sundays I get our towels and the adult laundry done. While our laundry is running, I am folding the kids’ clothes from Friday and Saturday.
- By Sunday night, I have folded/hung up all of our laundry, put it away, and I’m sitting in my home smelling all fresh and clean and enjoying life.
- Monday morning–I’m thanking my lucky stars that I prioritized getting my laundry completed for the week ahead.
So…my secret laundry tip ….
JUST DO IT. GET IT DONE. Make it your priority. Turn it into a habit. Don’t make excuses. Rearrange your schedule, plan in advance, and get that washing machine moving!
Nothing shocking. Nothing crazy. It’s all about mindset.
