Every six months I try to set aside some time to thoroughly deep clean our bedding, down comforters, mattresses, and cloth headboards. It’s quite a process, but as we enter cold and flu season and the holidays, there’s something extremely satisfying about knowing that I’ve done everything I could to keep our home germ free. It’s easy enough to clean your sheets regularly, but how often can you honestly say you clean what’s UNDER your sheets? Today I thought I’d show you how to clean a mattress and the things you may be overlooking each time you strip the sheets off the bed. Let’s take the steps needed to ensure your bed is as cozy and germ free as you can make it this time of the year!!
How to Deep Clean a Mattress
You can clean your mattress naturally starting with sprinkling baking soda all over the mattress and letting sit for about 10-15 minutes. After it’s sat, use your vacuum and attachments to carefully vacuum the mattress and baking soda off completely. After I’ve done that, I like to follow up by using my HomeRight Steam Machine with a little bit of lavender in the water to steam clean the mattress to kill dust mites and germs. The HomeRight steam cleaner kills 99% of germs on contact, making your mattress as clean as can be!
And a little secret weapon after it’s been vacuumed, steamed, and all the sheets cleaned? I like to use Counter Culture Probiotic Air and Fabric Refresher on the mattress before the sheets go on. If you have need to know how to clean a mattress that has been urinated on, then this is your secret weapon.
How to Clean Pillows
While your mattress cleaning is going, you can toss your pillows, two at a time, into your washer on gentle cycle. If you don’t feel comfortable washing them, you can opt to use your steam cleaner to clean them, as well, the same way that you cleaned your mattress.
Pro tips…
- Don’t forget to pull your bed skirts off and wash it with your sheets. It may not look dirty from afar, but when you pull it off you’ll likely notice how gross it is!
- Take your time to clean your down comforter using your steam cleaner, as well, if it will not fit in your washer or cannot be washed.
- Don’t forget a protective mattress cover to extend the life of your mattress and for kids, a waterproof mattress cover is always suggested,
- Regularly use Counter Culture Probiotic Air and Fabric Refresher on your mattress and bedding to help
Once you get through washing your bedding, your duvet, your pillows, and steam cleaning your mattress…you will will feel SO good about all your hardwork and you’ll be ready to get started on your next bed!
