Powder Room Ideas
Designing a powder room that fits your home’s interior design while also inviting to guests can be a daunting task. Therefore, we’ve got the best powder room ideas for you below!
What is the use of a powder room?
Powder rooms are essentially a guest bathroom. There, I said it. Off with the fancy jargon and in with simplicity!! Basically, a powder room is a small bathroom in the house where guests can use the toilet, freshen up, apply makeup, maybe even cry because they’re having an awful time at your house…who knows. Hah – kidding!
Most often, a powder room is stocked with the basic necessities – hand towels, toilet paper, soap, etc. Usually, a powder room design does not have a shower or bathtub.
Why do they call it a powder room?
The term “powder room” came about in the 18th century and it’s been used for various meanings ever since. Traditionally, it was considered a closet sized room where people would excuse themselves to go and apply extra powder to their wigs. Furthermore, some women would powder their nose (aka apply makeup) in these half bathrooms, and therefore the name continued on.
What is the difference between a powder room and a bathroom?
A powder room is typically a half bath (no shower or bathtub) that is used as a second or third bathroom for when guests are over. If your house is multiple floors, the powder room is usually located on the first floor so it’s easily accessible for guests.
A bathroom on the other hand can be any size (tiny bathroom or a larger bathroom) and usually has a sink, shower, toilet and sometimes a bathtub.
Basically, a powder room is a smaller space with fewer amenities than your typical bathroom design.
What are some tips for decorating a powder room?
Are you ready to transform your half bath? If so, check out these decorating ideas for your small space!
Firstly, when think about design ideas, look at different paint colors that would accentuate your color palette. Many people like bold or bright colors as a focal point for their powder room. Often times, I encourage people to think about painting both the ceiling and walls or finding someone (or DIY) to hand paint an accent wall during the bathroom remodel. Or, others like to opt for floral wallpaper. The point is, you don’t just need white walls to fit the vibe check of a powder room – sometimes bolder colors are recommend for this type of space!
Secondly, don’t skimp out on tile! For instance, you could do a subway tile floor or even put mosaic tile around a pedestal sink. Because the bathroom is so tiny, you want to make sure your powder room decorating touches really stand out!
Thirdly, don’t settle for ordinary bathroom mirrors! Instead, think about taking your bathroom decor to the next level. A gold framed mirror that accentuates your backsplash? I think YES!
Lastly, really put time into choosing your lighting! Most powder rooms don’t have a ton of natural light, so it’s important to find light fixtures that really bring out life in the small powder room. Personally, I like to layer my lighting to include both mood and functional lighting. Wall sconces are some of my go-to’s for home decor lighting…especially in my powder room! Trust me, you want to nail the ambiance!
How do you brighten a dark powder room?
We touched on this above, but let’s dive a bit deeper into it. Often times, powder rooms do not have a ton of natural light. Therefore, it’s up to you to lighten up your otherwise dark bathroom! Here are some ideas that you can incorporate if you’re dealing with this issue:
- Layer up your lighting! A pendant can lighten up the room, or a sconce can add some ambiance.
- Instead of focusing on creating symmetry, offset some of your decor. For instance, mount a mirror on the opposite side of a powder room vanity or hang your lighting all on one side of the room.
- Brighten up the walls! Whether you’re using shiplap, wainscotting or DIY painting, go with a bold color. Typically, we think of bold colors as moodier, but this doesn’t need to be the case! Florals or textured patterns are both great ideas.
