When I think of a modern farmhouse kitchen, I think of neutral colors and natural materials. In other words, I think of sleek, contemporary design mixed with a cozy farmhouse aesthetic. Think lots of reclaimed wood, a big farmhouse sink, white cabinetry…all those country kitchen feels.

So really, the farmhouse kitchen design can consist of multiple different looks. However, traditionally, the modern farmhouse style has modern features, industrial-inspired accents along with that rustic look. Therefore, it’s up to you to find a bar stool that accentuates your kitchen style.

What are the Pros and Cons of the Modern Farmhouse Style?

If you don’t love metal, the modern farmhouse style may not be for you – as there is often a lot of metal incorporated into design (think metal apron-front sink). Personally, I love metal bar stools.

Why should I have bar stools on my kitchen island?

I’ll start by saying that I realize bar stools aren’t for everyone. For some, it’s a type of home decor that just doesn’t cut it. However, I’m a big fan of stools at the kitchen bar. Here’s why.

Firstly, counter stools allow an informal place in your kitchen for people to gather. My kids love to do their homework at counter height or chat with me while I cook dinner.

Secondly, it’s a great place for guests to have a drink at your home bar before heading into the dining room for dinner. Hanging out at the kitchen counter before dinner is casual, but also better than being removed in the living room without the cook.

Thirdly, there isn’t a specific “trending” stool that you need to incorporate into your home design. Therefore, you can get so creative with bar stools! Some people love upholstered bar stools while others love stool features such as backrests or swivel seats. There are seriously so many options!

What colors are modern farmhouse bar stools?

Modern farmhouse bar stools can be any color! For instance, a lot of people really like to incorporate color with their metal bar stools. Think bright blue, white, and yellow.

Off-white or antique white is a really common bar stool color as it goes with the farmhouse theme. Moreover, some people will put a contrasting cushion or upholstery onto their bar furniture.

As I mentioned above, neutrals are common with the modern farmhouse style. For instance, beige, espresso, and walnut are common color schemes.

Wood counter stools or bar stools with distressed wood legs are also really popular with the farmhouse style!

What are the best materials to use to make modern farmhouse bar stools?

If you’ve decided to DIY, there are a few best materials to use. I’d recommend using either wood or metal. From this, you can then find a specific stool design that you’d like to incorporate.

With wood, there are a plethora of different finishes that you can do to stain the wood differently. Furthermore, some bar stools are made of rattan or bamboo for a more tiki look.
