High Gloss Stenciled Wall and a Royal Design Studio Giveaway!

A few months ago I won a stencil from I Heart Naptime’s blog to Royal Design Studio online. When I won I was super excited and picked out the Moroccan Chez Sheik Stencil almost immediately after having seen it used on another blog, Sugar Bee Crafts. When the stencil came in, I suddenly realized I hadn’t even thought about where I was going to use this stencil yet. My house is pretty simple and my style is not “Moroccan” or even remotely modern, so I was a bit apprehensive about making anything too bold in my house. Additionally, I have SO many colors in my house that the thought of adding ANOTHER color with a stencil was a bit difficult to handle. And then I saw it on Pinterest. A wall completely stenciled with the same color of the current wall, but in high gloss.

So that’s what I did. We already have Sand 2 on our walls from a few years ago when we moved in, so we gave our walls a fresh coat of paint going down the hallway and then purchased a small 1/2 gallon of HIGH GLOSS Sand 2 from Lowe’s.

Here’s what you need to stencil (or what worked for me):
Small foam roller
Paint pan
High Gloss paint
Royal Design Studio Stencil
Low adhesive spray
Drop clothes
Painter’s Tape

So we started by coating our hallway wall with a fresh coat of Sand 2 Matte paint. From there I sprayed my stencil on the back with low adhesive spray to help it stick to the wall (huge help!). I also used painter’s tape around the edges to make sure I didn’t have an “oops”. I started in the upper left corner of the wall and worked my way down the wall with the stencil.

The nice thing about Royal Design’s stencils is that they come with a LOT of good instructions and a full website full of FAQ’s and ideas. I used a different stencil company a few years ago to stencil my pantry and it came with ZERO instructions and I felt lost on what to do. Royal Design doesn’t let you get lost and have GREAT instructions right in the package. I had NO issues figuring out my very detailed stencil.

Here’s what my finished wall looks like!

It’s EXACTLY what I was hoping for! Something very subtle, but gives the hallway character. I will say the hardest part was that in some instances I couldn’t see where my previous paint lines were, so I did get the stencil a little screwed up towards the end, but it wasn’t too bad. On the UP side, the place I did mess up are unnoticeable except to me since the paint color is so light. So there’s a positive to that, as well.

SO are your ready to stencil YOUR own house?

I am giving away ONE Royal Design Studio Stencil of $50 value plus free shipping to one of my lucky readers in the continental U.S.. This is my first ever giveaway and I’m so excited it’s on a product I really found easy to use.

  12. hi! Loved so many of the different stencils. the Love the Lisboa Tile the best. Following you now on facebook thanks to Pinterest post the other day, but could not find your page on pinterest. Am following you on this blog now too.

  13. I would pick Ribbon Lattice. I found your site because I accidentally bout semi gloss instead of flat paint and remembered seeing people stencil using the same color but different sheens. We are moving my mother into our home and I am trying to give her a really nice bedroom. I thought a simple pattern done in a higher gloss finish would be sweet, but not too over the top for her. It would also make my husband feel better about having to buy two more gallons of paint!

  14. Just to double check! You used the same color; one in matte and one in high gloss? I have been researching how to do this to my dinning room and there are so many different ways to do this! I really love how yours came out!!

  15. I liked Royal Design Studio on FB.. As well as YOU the cards we drew.. I would love either the classic damask or the Donatella stencil.. 🙂 LOVE them! My daughter loves the feathers!
