For years now I have wanted to replace our patio furniture and this year was the year I told myself–out with the old and in with the new. Then, you guys, our lawnmower broke down…like literally, the bar that holds the wheel on (formally called the transaxle), snapped in half…and just like that, we needed to buy a new lawnmower. So now we have a fancy new mower, but we’re still stuck with the same patio set from 8+ years ago that I can’t stand. So I decided–why not do something to try to make it more tolerable for another year or two until we can get a new patio set?! Today I want to show you guys how to paint metal patio furniture for this patio furniture makeover project I did using my HomeRight Super Finish Max Paint Sprayer!

Let’s walk through how I was able to get this whole project done in just one day!

What You Need:

HomeRight Super Finish Max Paint Sprayer

Rustoleum Ultra Cover Outdoor Paint in black (3-4 cans depending on the size of your project)

Sand Paper

HomeRight Spray Shelter

Drop clothes

Wet and Dry Rags

How to Refurbish Patio Furniture

Start by cleaning your furniture off real good. We sprayed all the cobwebs off, got out a rag, and really gave it a good wipe down, careful to remove all the dirt and grime.

Once all washed off, we took the sand paper and gently sanded the places where the paint was lifting up so that they were nice and smooth. We did not rough up the furniture since most of the paint was still in tact. I dried all the furniture off, then one by one I placed my patio chairs into my HomeRight Spray Shelter in my garage and got to spraying.

I used Rustoleum’s Ultra Cover Paint in Black Semi-Gloss from Home Depot. I didn’t have to thin out the paint at all, which was good. I held the Spray Machine about a foot from the chairs and started painting back and forth, then I’d turn the chair and get the side, and then the next side until completely covered.

The paint dries very quickly, so by the time I was done painting all four chairs and the table, the first chair was completely dried. I sprayed all the furniture with two thick coats of paint just to be sure to protect it.

It’s amazing how a coat of paint can do such wonders!

For the table, I placed inside of the spray shelter and painted one side, let it dry. Then painted the next, let it dry, until all four sides were painted. The tablet definitely took the most time, but made the biggest difference!

I let dry inside of my garage overnight and then the next day I bought some new cushions and a new umbrella from At Home store.

I literally love how it turned out…and I can definitely live with this set for a while now. The tan color it was before hid the real beauty between the clean lines and almost modern look that it has now!

The HomeRight Super Max Paint Sprayer sprayed the paint on beautifully…a nice, even finish and no drips or runs!

I’ve always wanted black striped patio cushions and now I finally have them and for a fraction of the price of a new set!

I am SO SO please with how this turned out…don’t be afraid to take that existing furniture you have and refinish it so you can save some money and make the perfect set for your back yard! At Home Stores have a HUGE selection of patio cushions to choose from if you need something new for your set.

Hope you enjoyed this easy Patio Furniture Makeover project!

Pin it for later…
