We just took our kids camping a few weeks ago and we had a great time, but MAN is camping a lot of work! All the packing, preparing, planning that goes into it…not to mention planning your meals. You cannot go camping without having a strategic plan for food. Today I thought I’d show you an easy camping dinner idea that will soon become your favorite camping recipe and you can prep most of it at home and enjoy it once you hit the campground! Let’s get into how we made these delicious Walking Tacos for a make ahead camping meal.
How to Make this Easy Camping Dinner Idea
This recipe is SO easy, here’s what you need:
- HomeRight Electro-Torch Fire Starter
- Taco Meat (browned and seasoned at home)
- Black Beans
- Shredded Lettuce
- Shredded Cheese
- Sour Cream
- Salsa
- Black Olives / Jalapenos / Other toppings as desired
- Individual bags of Fritos and Doritos
How to Make Walking Tacos
A few weeks back at Kroger we bought this ADORABLE mini charcoal grill for camping. I snagged it for FOUR WHOLE DOLLARS during their summer sale. It ended up saving the day along with our HomeRight Electro-Torch Fire Starter because we got into camp later than anticipated and by the time we got setup it was getting dark and the wood wouldn’t catch.
Luckily, I brought our HomeRight Electro-Torch, this mini grill, and an extension cord and we were able to fire up the grill in just a few minutes!! I had pre-made the taco meat at home, seasoned it with my favorite Taco Bell seasoning, and I added a can of rinsed black beans to the mix so the beans were already in there. I placed the whole thing in a large bag in the cooler and brought it camping with us.
When it was time to eat, I covered a cast iron skillet with foil and placed my taco meat directly onto the grill to warm up! The Electro-Torch heated up the coals in 2-3 minutes and we were ready to roll with warming up our taco meat in no time!!
In order to be most efficient with your meal, I suggest bringing along a Tupperware container with all your toppings in it in one place so all you have to do is remove the lid and add a spoon for your guests! Once your meat is warmed, you open your bag of Doritos and gently crush them up. Then you add in your toppings–cheese, lettuce, salsa, sour cream, olives, jalapenos…whatever you desire!
Once built, you can eat straight out of the bag with a fork and pitch the bag when done! Not only is MAKING this dinner easy, cleanup is easy too. You’ll simply pull the foil from the cast iron skillet and throw it out. And then cover the Tupperware containers back up and you’re all done!!
The whole group loved them and the kids enjoyed being able to eat chips for dinner (haha–it’s the little things). I loved that everything was all ready to go, we just had to pull it out, warm up the meat, and build our tacos. Then put lids back on the containers and put everything else in the trash.
