Stenciled Food Storage Containers {Handmade Gift Idea}

Have you ever walked by something in a store with cute kitchenware and thought…I LOVE that, but what would I use it for? Today I’ll show you! I took some cute ceramic bowls with wooden lids from the Target Deals section, stenciled them, and used them for cute and unique food storage in my house. They’re also great for dropping off meals to friends as a handmade gift idea or personalizing for a housewarming gift! They perfectly complimented the new FolkArt Lily(r) and Val Stencils at Michaels  which I love.

What you need:

FolkArt Acrylic multi surface Paint (shown in Magenta and Midnight Green)

Lily and Val Stencils at Michaels

Stenciling Brushes

Tape

Start with your storage containers. The wooden lids were nice because the paint will hold up well when handwashed (as directed on the container) and it gives it a great vintage look.

The Lily and Val stencils are inspirational hand lettering and illustrations drawn with the simplicity of chalk by chalkboard artist Valerie McKeehan.

They come in four different designs with three different sheets per pack. Some of the letters are multi layer, so it adds great detail to the lettering and looks really pretty. I LOVE the rose stencils, which I used for this post, and I used two different font packages.

Take your stencil, tape it in place on your container lid, and then take your stenciling brush and dab it in the FolkArt paint. The key to clean stenciling is to make sure to offload the excess paint onto another surface before you start stenciling. If your paintbrush is drowning in paint, then your stencil will too and the lines won’t come out clean.

Try the stencil on a test “canvas” once to get the hang of it before you try the real deal. 

If you notice on the photo above, see how little excess paint is on the stencil? That gives you an idea of just how little paint you need.

I continued this process on all three of the containers and then let them dry. I just how pretty and simple they are with just a little creativity. The double layered lettering stencils were so fun and allowed me to get the hand lettered look on the lids with no hand lettering skills at all! So cool, right!?

I have a friend having a baby soon and I fully intend to make her some cute “Welcome Baby” containers with freezer meals inside of them…takes minutes to make and your friends will love the sentiment that went into this handmade gift.

I just love these Lily and Val stencils and have some big plans for upping my chalkboard game! We have a chalkboard in our laundry room that I want to decorate for fall and using the new FolkArt Liquid Erasable Chalk I can get durable, smudge-proof and long lasting chalk designs on the board. It washes away with a damp sponge, leaving no shadow and applies with a foam pouncer. It gives the appearance of handcrafted chalk art, but with a little help from Lily and Val.
