Whether you’re a seasoned garden geek or are a beginner ready to get your green thumb on, we’ve got the best flower bed ideas for you right here! Therefore, keep reading to learn more about garden design and how you can beautify your outdoor space!
What are some ways to create a flower bed?
While we’d all love to jump right in and design a gorgeous flower bed – the truth is, you need to make your bed before you can use it!
Firstly, whether you’re starting a brand new flower bed or working on a bed that has been landscaped before, you need to check if there are any buried utility lines. You can check on the government’s website for your jurisdiction’s phone number to call. Trust me, you don’t want to be hitting any lines while you’re trying to garden! Yikes!!
Secondly, you want to define the outline of your planting bed. Some people like to do this with a garden hose while others use plant stakes and wrap twine in between.
Thirdly, if you’re working on a bed that currently has flowers or has had them before, you want to kill everything! Depending on what is in the bed, you can use pruners or sometimes your hands.
Fourthly, after you let the bed sit – take a tiller or shovel and turn the soil on the bed over. Here, you want your soil to be damp (not dry or soaking wet).
Next, mix compost into the soil – usually 2-3 inches thick.
After, get rid of any excess weeds that are visible after you’ve turned over the soil.
Lastly, install your irrigation system! After this, you can add another layer of compost or mulch to protect your flower bed design!
What are some things you can plant in a flower bed?
So, you may be wondering …what exactly can I plant in my flower beds? Lucky for you, we’ve put together the best planter ideas below 🙂
Unless you’re living on a large property, chances are, you’re designing a fairly small garden. That being said, you need to be strategic when it comes to maximizing your garden space.
Therefore, I try to incorporate a plethora of different things into my flower bed.
Firstly, think about adding some colorful flowers. It’s really up to you and the weather conditions of where you live on what flowers you decide to plant. For example, some people like to plant small flowers such as perennials, zinnias, daylilies, daisies or impatiens in their flower garden. However, some people tend to go with large flowers – sunflowers, hydrangeas or hostas.
Secondly, think about adding some fruits and vegetables into your flower bed. For instance, I make sure to plant tomatoes and strawberries every year. Then, when I need to go to the grocery store – I can just walk outside to my backyard!
Thirdly, think about getting creative! Some people like to convert a repurposed tree stump into a flower bed. Plant some ornamental grass around the old tree, add some petunias or annuals and there you go – a beautiful flower bed!
Lastly, think about the actual look of your garden bed. Do you want to do a raised bed? If so, I love the look of a raised bed made out of blocks and pavers. Throw a cute little gnome in there and you’ll have the best curb appeal on the block!
What are some creative ways to use the space in a small flower bed?
Now that you’ve planted what you want in your garden, you may have some awkward leftover space. This is your chance to get creative with your garden ideas! For example, you could try and incorporate some of these landscaping ideas:
- Placing rustic wheelbarrows into the bed and planting flowers amongst them
- Plant flowers into round metal garden edging tins
- Flower pots!
- Depending on the location of your flower bed, put in a trellis with pops of color!
- Create a garden path within the flower bed
- Container gardening!
- Plant flowers at the base of a tree (plant a small tree in flower bed, if needed)
