With Teacher Appreciation and the end of school quickly approaching, I thought I’d share an easy teacher gift idea that you could give a teacher that is something both fun and useful for the class! For our son’s class, they earn “Dojo” points for good behavior and classroom work and once they earn enough points they get to pick a treat out of the treasure chest. So as a special thank you to my son’s teacher, today I thought I’d create a DIY Classroom Reward Chest made with a wooden chest, milk paint, and mod podge!
What you need for this project:
Wooden Chest
3-4 pages of scrapbook paper
Shaker Red FolkArt Milk Paint
Paper Cutter
Mod Podge Brushes and Squeegee
How to:
Start by painting your wooden chest with FolkArt Milk Paint in red. This color is a great, bright red color and it goes on so easily on the wood. The nice thing about Milk Paint is that some of the wood grain still shows through the paint a bit too, which is great.
After you paint your chest and let it dry, use your paper cutter and slice small pieces of paper to start mod podging over the top slats of your chest.
I would use the paintbrush and paint the slat, put your piece of paper on top, then paint back over top with another coat of mod podge.
After I covered all the slats, I layered on ONE last coat of thick mod podge and let dry. Then I used a piece of sand paper to smooth out any rough edges and corners where the paper didn’t lay as flat.
Once the outside was done, I got started working on the inside. I placed two fun pieces of paper on the top and the bottom and mod podged them in place the same way (mod podge, paper, another layer of mod podge).
I love how bright and fun it turned out and hopefully it’s something Mrs. N can use in her classroom for many years to come!

Where did you get this wooden chest?! I am curious because it looks like the perfect size! Thanks!
Hi Katie, I think I got that at Hobby Lobby
