Looking to do a DIY air freshener? Well, follow along!
We moved into a new house in October and one thing I’m still struggling with is the home smell. An older gentleman lived there for quite a while and the home itself was built in the early 80’s, so there is a lingering “musk” I’m working to rid the home of. I’ve tried charcoal air purifying bags to help rid the room of the scent and I think they’re working because the musk is going down a bit, but there’s still that old house smell I’m working on updating with a fresher, cleaner scent.
And sure, I could run to the nearest Bath and Body Works and plug an artificial scent into every outlet in my home, but that really doesn’t do much for me. I like my house to just have a natural, clean and uplifting scent that seems like I’m trying, but I’m not trying TOO hard with $100’s in Bath and Body products. And I’m not really a fan of essential oils or putting drops of essential oil like eucalyptus and tea tree oil in room sprays.
So….
I decided to try and make homemade air fresheners so I could put natural scents without toxic chemicals all over my home. What’s better than making your own natural air freshener spray? I used lemon, but if you aren’t a fan – think about what drops of your favorite essential oil (or a similar scent) you’d like to have in your home. Some people do lavender essential oil while others incorporate cinnamon sticks or even geranium into the deodorizer!
Therefore, today I’m sharing with you how I used three simple ingredients to make my own DIY Air Freshener and how you can bottle it up and gift it as a gift for other new homeowners, as well! So if you’ve been searching for that unique housewarming gift idea, I’ve got you covered!
How to make Air Freshener with Lemons
Start by slicing your lemons into halves and then half the halves. You should have 6-8 pieces of lemon sliced depending on how large they are. Once your lemons are sliced, add them into the mason jar and then add 2-3 springs of fresh rosemary.
If you aren’t a fan of the smell of lemon essential oil (or that lemon smell), then you can make your home smell however you want. You can even use grapefruit or orange slices if you want.
Fill the jar up to the top with 5/6 cups water, then add in a 1/2 tablespoon of vanilla extract. Put the lid on the jar and give it a gentle shake. Then wrap with ribbon.
Instruct your recipients to put into a pan of water and bring to a boil, then let simmer on low to disburse scent.

The mixture can last quite a while…at least a week. As the water gets boiled off, you can add more water and bring back to a boil. Just leave it in a small saucepan on the stove and let it sit while you’re out, then add the distilled water and turn back on when you’re home.
You can see that I put the aromatherapy into a mason jar, but you can also put it in a spray bottle if you want to make a spritz/cleaning product. I recently saw someone do a hack like this and put the fresh scent in a glass spray bottle – which looked really professional for making their own air freshener!
Easy peasy – it takes a short total time to make and is so much cheaper than buying an oil diffuser or a grocery store room freshener/disinfectant! Hope you enjoyed my tutorial!
