We’re celebrating our five year anniversary since moving into our house, but yet there is still decorating to be done! Anyone else empathize with me? Sometimes you can put things off and put them off until you finally realize that maybe it’s time to bite the bullet, spend a little money, and just make a decision to style that little corner of your house that you’ve been neglecting!! For me, that little space is my front entryway area. My entryway has become a hodgepodge of garage sale finds, storage for things that have no other place to live, and shoes, coats, and backpacks. It’s completely uninviting and unimpressive…and dare I say…up until this week I still had some Christmas decorations in a vase (don’t judge). Today I want to share with you my tips on picking the perfect table for your home, styling it with a few inexpensive finds and things around the house, and freshening up your space with a few quick additions!
With the fresh spring season emerging, I decided it was time to renew my home and freshen things up a bit, but I didn’t want to spend a TON of money. My neighborhood Target is about three miles down the road (be jealous!), so I made it my mission to head there and pick out something new and unique to fill that space. It’s about a 25 inch wide space, so I knew I needed to find a new pretty table and some home decor to decorate with. Target has TONS of small tables available…some are more traditional, some are more modern, some are chunky, some are skinny…all are gorgeous and wonderfully priced. I walked around for hours and really had a hard time settling on a look. My house as a whole isn’t that “model” home you expect from some of my gorgeous blogging friends. We still have the very non-trendy tan walls and I don’t decorate with tons of colors because I’d literally have to replace all the decor in my house to do that. So I knew going in I’d have to focus more on what would FIT in my house rather than what I’d LOVE to have in my house. So that brings me to tip one…
Tip One: Know your style.
It’s ok to branch out a bit, but a hot pink side table may not look so great in your very neutral mono-chromatic house. Sure that hot pink gorgeousness is screaming your name, but let’s be honest, friend, it just won’t fit.
Tip Two: Be willing to think outside the box.
With Tip One stated, it IS ok to branch out a bit. For example, this gold side table is fun, outside the box and trendy. It’s a showstopper and it’s a great price ($69). And it fits a lot of different decor styles…you could put gold in just about any room and the style can be both modern and traditional depending on the way you look at it. You don’t have to settle for the simple brown wood or white table…branch out a bit, find something that makes a statement without screaming at your guests.
*As a side note…this table was a heartbeat away from coming home with me.
After you’ve decided on a style or color scheme, find a few special pieces to really make it pop. When I went to Target, I settled on a navy blue table for a few reasons…1. I love navy blue and it was the little, subtle hint of color I’d been wanting 2. It had a door with storage on the inside, which would provide me with some added storage, which is always nice with kids 3. It was a great price at $99.
After I chose my table, I spent a little time deciding on what to do with it. There’s not a lot of space on top to put stuff up there and we tend to really like the modern rustic look…even a little nautical. SO when I found this pretty little white whale, I was determined to find a way to make it work. I ended up finding a double candle holder that went very nicely and fit the table perfectly and I added two navy blue candles to it to tie things in. I also picked up a simple silver picture frame to put a pop of color in on the inside with my daughter in red.
Tip Three: Try to tie in other accents of color to make your small space pop.
I shopped my house and grabbed three books, wrapped them in colorful, but coordinating, scrapbook paper and put them on the inside of my table. It provides a pop of color and I didn’t have to spend a dime.
Tip Four: Fresh flowers make everything more homey.
Finally, if you’re expecting company and really want to wow them, I always try to pick up an inexpensive bouquet of flowers to set out. The more vibrant and colorful the better! My bright colored tulips really pop against my navy blue table and white whale, don’t you think!?
I took a photo of my family and had an artist recreate it by hand drawing the photo. It will “wow” your guests and create a topic of conversation as they enter and/or leave your home. It’s nice to have unique, different ways to recognize your family without always using traditional photos. So get creative and find unique ways to throw homage to those that inhabit your dwelling.
Tip Six: Find a table that fits your space and position it to make the most of the space.
This seems obvious, but make sure to take measurements of your space before you purchase your table and bring your tape measure to the store with you to be sure—nothing worse than having to return something you have your heart set on because you didn’t measure. Additionally, think about how that table can fit your space. I originally positioned this table to go flat against the wall, but after giving it some thought, I decided to turn it and then use a large vase I had to fill in the area behind it and leave some branches poking up. This instantly made the space look more full and it really made the table and it’s contents POP vs. leaving it flat against the wall.
So let’s recap…
1. Don’t betray your style, go with what makes you happy…not what’s trendy.
2. Think outside the box and be creative with your styling options.
3. Use a few color accents to make your space pop.
4. Decorate with flowers as you find time.
5. Find new ways to show off your family without the traditional photo…photos are nice, but look for some personalization and unique items for your home.
6. Make the most of your space.
This was my space at Christmas….a junky yard sale table with much too big branches and mismatched wall decor. And yes, those boxes of Christmas lights were truly meant to be for styling purposes (wink wink).
Here’s that same area now….
And Target has tons of options for side tables too in case mine doesn’t do it for you…
