I LOVE myself a good party…and this year when my son asked for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party I decided I really wanted to do something special for him since it’s his FIFTH birthday! We did the bounce house last year, but that didn’t leave momma much room for getting creative, so this year I decided to utilize my VERY under-utilized finished basement, invite a few friends from daycare and baseball over…and celebrate!!
There are a lot of different directions you can go with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Parties, but I wanted this to be bright and fun and colorful…so I made use of their mask colors to decorate the party table and to accentuate the overall party theme.
The room is kind of long and narrow, so we set up two long tables and place settings for all the kids. Then we did one taller table at the end of the room to display the cake and desserts on. Normally for other parties I’ve focused on a big dreamy dessert table for my party (like this Candy Corn Birthday), but this time I really wanted to set up a pretty table for the kids to eat at and sit at.
My friend found Ninja Turtle masks on sale at Target for $3/four pack on sale…so the masks were an easy addition to the table. I then used square green plates from Oriental Trading for food. I also got party blowers from Oriental Trading that are always a hit with the kids. I matched the colors up to the fat quarters that I used for linens on the table…like masks.
For centerpieces, I used green mason jars and added ninja masks with eyes around them…then a little light inside each one to light it up a bit. We bought a small helium tank for $23 from Meijer and filled up green balloons to hang from all the chairs and for the mason jar centerpieces. All the kids went home with a balloon.
I wanted it to look like a city, so on the walls I used black tablecloth material, cut it out into larger and smaller rectangles and then used Neon Expo Markers to make the windows on the buildings. We covered the back wall in black tablecloth, as well, to make the whole room pop and make it look like the real ninja turtle secret lair.
Next up is the fun parts of the party…the cake, the balloon, and the treats!!
We got this AMAZING cake from Angela’s Cakes local to me in Central Ohio. She did all of that and it’s all edible! The turtles are made with modeling chocolate and rice krispies and there’s no fondant on the cake (which makes it taste a lot better in my opinion!).
It was definitely the focal point of the whole party!
We also had a little mishap with a balloon twister last year, so this year they twisted a Ninja Turtle Balloon for free for our son’s party…he thought it was super cool!
Other treats included sewer rats and crangs…Autumn Lynn’s Chocolate Sins made the sewer rats out of chocolate and red velvet cake (they were cake pops OFF a stick) and the crangs had oreos in them and were covered in pink chocolate.
For the kids activities, I decided to make pizza cookies with personalized mini pizza boxes. So the day of I took pre-made sugar cookie dough, rolled it out, and then cut 4-5″ circles out of the dough. They baked to about 6 1/2″ around and fit perfectly in my 7″ pizza boxes. The kids got some red frosting, white chocolate shavings (for the “cheese”) and then their choice of candy to decorate with.
When you first walked downstairs you saw the cute Ninja Turtle Wall Hanging from Oriental Trading and then the cookie pizza bar!
Little fingers wanted that candy so bad at first, but we were able to hold them off until after we’d eaten real pizza! 🙂
I took white chocolate and used a grater to shave it, then placed a little bit in each individual cup for the kids. Then they used that cup to go up to the candy bar to get toppings for their pizza. I served cherry balls, swedish fish, gummy works, skittles, and more for their toppings.
They all got a bit to make their pizzas, then we set them aside for later…putting them in individual boxes.
I’m NOT claiming this is a healthy or sugar free activity BUT the kids will love it…trust me!
For food, we kept it pretty simple. We served pepperoni and cheese pizza, then I made this ninja turtle fruit platter using my son’s favorite fruits…grapes and raspberries. I figured that kids really don’t eat that much, so I wasn’t going to get too carried away with tons of food. We also served green Kool-Aid for “sewer ooze” to drink.
When we cut the cake the kids got a huge surprise…we came up with the idea of doing colored layers for the cake in the ninja turtle mask colors. So one cake was purple and orange and another was red and blue. The kids got to choose which color cake they’d like. 🙂
The last activity at the party was a Ninja Training station (more details to come on that)…needless to say it was great fun!
As guests came and left they were greeted with a turtle at the door welcoming them! We used a green tablecloth, two huge eyes, and blue scrapbook paper to create it…took 5 minutes to make.
DimplePrints created all the prints for the party…she created the banner, the pizza box labels, the signs, and invitations for his party.
In lieu of gifts, we asked all our guests to bring a book for a book exchange between the kids. It worked out very well and all the children went home with a new book amongst all their goodies from the party. Andrew ended up with a really cool Superhero Book that he’s excited to get reading.
Overall, the party was a huge success. This momma was EXHAUSTED after all the last minute planning and running around, but it was 100% worth it. You only turn 5 once and we thought we’d go a little wild for him this time around.
