This summer we made a big decision. After YEARS of our kids being in daycare year round, pretty much from about 3 months old on, we decided to let them be little. What do you mean by that, you ask? Well, we decided it was time for a summer change. We decided that they needed to have the ability to get out of the “classroom” environment for the summer and let them sleep in, let them stay up late(r), let them play with their friends no matter what day it was, let them eat sweet, cool treats and let them run themselves ragged at the pool, the park, the splash pad or wherever they decided to go for the day. WE MADE A BIG SUMMER CHANGE!
Being that we’re both working parents, we opted to pull them from their daycare for 2 months, hire an awesome and creative babysitter and give them free reign of their summer fun. It hasn’t been without it’s issues though, especially financially (if you thought daycare was expensive, wait till you’re paying a sitter hourly!), but overall we’re so happy we made this decision!
So this summer our kids are on the go, making memories…and even though they’re not all with us, it gives me great joy to know that they are having summers like I did when I was growing up…playing outside and knocking things off their kid sized bucket list and just enjoying life!
Need some summer tips for letting your kids enjoy summer and managing a budget? I got you covered!
Shop for deals. At the start of summer I was on deal sites like Groupon booking inexpensive excursions for the kids such as bounce places, indoor playgrounds, craft camps, pottery painting, and more! It was an easy way to keep them busy without spending a fortune.
Make a list of all the local parks and splash pads that are free. Rotate your list of parks and splash pads as they make for inexpensive entertainment and all too often my kids find a friend they know there to play with! Impromptu play dates are the best–no planning involved!
Let them do ONE excursion a week. So they want to go to the Zoo or local kids museum? That’s cool, but that can’t be sustained on a budget daily, so my kids get once a week to go somewhere that costs money. And even then, their sitter is good about packing a lunch for the trip.
It’s ok to let them be bored. One day a week my sitter and I decide to leave them at home to do things like watch a movie, read books, do art/crafts, play with the neighbors or play on the trampoline.
Shop for affordable snacks. My kids are EATING ME OUT OF HOUSE AND HOME THIS SUMMER you guys! I cannot keep enough snacks in the house it seems. So my GO TO snack for a hot day has been a big bag of Budget Saver Twin Pops!
I’m willing to bet you ALL have had a Twin Pop at some point! It was invented during the Great Depression so that two children could split one for a nickel (a little bit of history for you there!). In 1989, Budget Saver began packing six assorted flavors in one bag and today you can just look for the signature Rainbow Array assortment in the big clear bag in your frozen popsicle section of the grocery store!
Even more fun…moms can turn to Budget Saver Twin Pops to make every situation a sweet MOMent. They want to see your sweet MOMent with #twinpopscontest and enter to win a grand prize! I feel like this summer has started off great and we aren’t even anywhere near over year. My kids have plowed through their huge bag of Twin Pops in no time and that’s perfect fine with me because they are very affordable and I can buy huge bags of them without hesitation. So now when I come home from work they’re usually sweaty, sticky, and blue lipped…but most importantly, they’re HAPPY and getting a chance to be little!
Happy Summer All!
