DIY Neon Blackboard Teacher Gift

My son’s not in school yet, but he does attend preschool at his daycare…where we’ve developed great relationships with the teachers in his classroom each year. I always like coming up with fun ideas for teacher gifts (like this Apple Button Bag I made for Mom it Forward this week!) and I know that neon is super fun and popular with kids right now…so I came up with this fun and easy DIY Neon Blackboard Teacher Gift!

What you need for this project:

Ribba Frame from Ikea

Neon Expo Markers from Office Max/Office Depot

Washi Tape

Black Paper

Ability to free hand letters, stencil or Letter Masks from Hazel and Ruby Handmade

How to:

I started by taking the outer white part of my Ribba Frame from Ikea and adding washi tape around it. This was just a little fun touch. You can either leave it white, paint the area, pull it out altogether and make your “blackboard” bigger, or add washi tape for decoration.

After that, I added the black paper to the inside of the frame where the photo would go and closed the whole thing up.

I pulled out some awesome Neon Expo markers that I got at Office Max and decided to use them for the inside of the frame. I’m not too good at free handing, so I used stencil masks from Hazel and Ruby to trace the letters, then pull them off and color them in!

use stencils to outline letters

Once I traced them and filled them in, I laid out all my letters and got to coloring. My son had so much fun watching and helping me…he’s a big colorer and thought the whole project was fun.

I stenciled and colored everything then sat back and enjoyed my work! It’s so pretty!

And these neon Expo markers will even glow under a blacklight! This would be SUCH a great project or decoration for a glow in the dark party!! You could decorate so easily with frames you already have on hand! I figured this would be a great teacher gift because you can give them their own Neon Expo markers and they can write on the board each week with class assignments, quotes of the week, and more!

This fun little project took no time at all and was so fun to make! I can’t wait to make more!
