I’m not typically a pie maker of any sort, but I had to share my Mini Mason Jar Apple Pie recipe that I used for my son’s 2nd birthday party a few weeks ago.
I’m not typically a pie maker of any sort, but I had to share my Mini Mason Jar Apple Pie recipe that I used for my son’s 2nd birthday party a few weeks ago.
These pies were the most popular of all the desserts I made. I used a simple recipe my mom used to make for us when we were kids, but I added pie crust and mason jars to make them individual sized.
Ingredients:
Pillsbury Pie Crust
2- 20 oz. cans of apple pie filling
One stick of butter
One package of white cake mix
4 oz. mason jars- 12 pack
2 inch round cookie cutter (or cup that size)
All of your ingredients are shown. The most expensive will be the mini mason jars, which are about $9.00 for a dozen jars. If you plan on making these ever again, they are worth the investment.
Roll our your dough onto a clean countertop and use your circle cookie cutter to cut a piece of dough.
Fold the dough into the mason jar, almost in a wonton shape.
Then use your fingers to smooth the dough along the edges of the jar evenly. It will go about 1/2 to 3/4 up the side of the jar, but not all the way to the top. This is fine because you’ll have a crumb topping over the top that will cover the gap area.
Once all of your jars have the pie dough in them, you can spoon in your pie filling. Each 4 oz. jar takes about 2-3 teaspoons of apple pie filling. Leave a little room at the top for your crumb crust.
Now you’re ready to add your topping!
Take a loaded teaspoon of white cake mix and dump on top of your mini pie.
Spread it evenly across the top so it’s in a nice covered layer over the apples.
Then add a thin slice of butter to the top of the pie. Trust me…it looks weird, but it’s divine.
This is how your pie should look before it goes into the oven.
I had some extra dough left over, so I also made an extra pie adding the criss cross pattern across the top of the pie, which is another way you could do your pie without the added calories of the butter/crumb topping.
Bake the pies at 350 for about 25-30 minutes. Check them around 20 minutes and see how well they are cooked and make the determination from there.
The final product:
YUM!!! I made two of them and then placed the rest in the freezer with the lids on them to bake for Thanksgiving OR you can just make a batch and freeze them for little snacks whenever you want something sweet.
Thanks for reading! I’m going to try one out now…and the verdict is….

I am in love with any mason jar cake, pie, whatever. They are so cute as individualized desserts – and a great way to instill portion control:-)
